Hadeer Omar

Hadeer Omar (1988) is an Egyptian new media artist, performer, producer and Assistant Professor at VCUarts in Qatar. Her work centers on exploring socio-cultural issues through immersive XR media, graphics, photography, A/V performances, 360 storytelling, and video art installations.

One of the key focuses of her artistic practice is to utilize technology to examine complex issues of cultural identity, memories, and the self in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Her approach to storytelling challenges conventional perceptions of art and design, inviting viewers to examine in new and thought-provoking ways.

Hadeer’s XR practice is expanding to 360 filmmaking, with her short film “Gihan” got developed in Doha Film Institute’s Documentary Lab, led by Rithy Panh, from 2022 to 2023. Hadeer’s exploration of performance has led her to collaborate with musicians and sound artists on numerous projects, including an A/V performance at Shubbak Festival in the UK, “Sonic jeel Performance” Projection mapping and light installation, Printed Matter’s virtual art book fair in NYC 2021 with Youssef Alimam, and “Everywhere” Tam Gallery/Karim Francis Gallery/Medrar in Egypt, and Tasweer Festival in Qatar.Hadeer’s previous projects include directing the documentary short film “Ouda w Sala” (2011), “Hack You” video art at Cairo video festival and Roznama (2015), and the experimental documentary short film “Chaos Antidote” (2017), screened at Facade Video Festival in Bulgaria and selected for the Ajyal Youth Film Festival in Qatar. And “The Reason _ July 2017” was officially selected at Aesthetica Short Film Festival, UK, 2018.
