Day of Days

Country: USA

Runtime: 00:16:00

In 1958, a knife’s edge separates Martin Luther King Jr. from death. Confined to a hospital bed after a near-fatal stabbing, the 29-year-old civil rights leader faces his greatest challenge yet. Not just to survive, but to find the strength to continue his fight in a world that seems determined to silence him.

Enter Howard Thurman, King’s spiritual mentor and a man whose ideas shaped the fledgling Civil Rights Movement. In a single, electrifying day, these two titans of thought embark on a journey of the mind and soul that will alter the course of history.

Day of Days is a podcast and companion immersive experience that takes you inside the hospital room where King’s future hangs in the balance. The immersive experience allows audiences to witness this encounter and follow the journey of how King and Thurman came together on that fateful day.

The Immersive Experience features the stunning voice of Obie Award Winning actor Billy Eugene Jones as Howard Thurman and photogrammetric scans of historic sites around the world.

Director Statement

This tabletop AR experience is part of what I call a “spatialized podcast.” We are using AR and photogrammetric capture to add a lay of site-based experience to a historical fiction podcast. The 15-minute experience for mobile devices and tablets, allows audiences to explore the backstory of how King and Thurman came together on that fateful day in Harlem Hospital, King in recovery from a stabbing and Thurman searching for a new leader to the Fellowship Church movement. The immersive experience both sets up the events in the podcast and helps audiences understand how important particular moments and locations were for the leaders of the Civil Right Movement. From the foothills of India to the front porch of King’s parsonage home in Montgomery, small details in this AR world become clues to a larger story of social transformation.
