Director Statement
Through the story of the friendship between a solitary fisherman and a pelican, we wanted first and foremost to develop our relationship with solitude. This feeling, known to all, can be experienced in completely different ways. The island, for example, is a logical setting for the character’s solitude. In this film, the hero has lived alone for many years. His solitude is sustained by the repetitiveness of his daily life. The cyclical representation of time (daily and yearly) also amplifies the hero’s isolation from his environment. A new perspective challenges him and his way of life: through his new friendship, he becomes aware of his isolation and acts accordingly.
Jack & Flo’s story is also one of opening up to the world, and realizing what friendship can bring. Jack understands that life can be shared, something he had forgotten. The second part of the film, when Flo leaves, represents the questioning of our habits and the introspection we can have at such moments.
Against the backdrop of an angst-ridden end-of-the-world, we wanted a happy ending, so that it could offer a little hope and lightness. That’s why the pelican, detached from this feeling of solitude, becomes the key to solving the problem. He is both the embodiment and the messenger of this end of loneliness.
Jack & Flo is a sober story, like a timeless tale.
With this project, we want to take into account the history of animation and sound, and define an audiovisual work that satisfies all ages. We’ve worked with teams we know well, and with whom we’ve worked in the past from near and far, who have given this short film a real soul.
