Ioana Mischie

Ioana Mischie is a visionary Romanian-born transmedia artist, writer/director, and futurist whose work spans film, virtual reality, and immersive storytelling. With a mission to fuse meaningful narratives with emerging technologies and long-term social impact, she has been internationally recognized for her innovative contributions to the creative industries.

A Fulbright Grantee and alumna of the USC School of Cinematic Arts—where she collaborated with the Civic Imagination Project, Worldbuilding Lab, and Mixed Reality Lab—Mischie earned her PhD in transmedia storytelling with Summa Cum Laude honors from UNATC. Her work has been showcased at over 250 festivals worldwide, including Cannes, Venice Biennale, Palm Springs, and Thessaloniki, and developed through elite platforms such as Berlinale Talents, Sundance Capalbio, and the Locarno Academy.

Mischie’s interactive projects have received accolades from The Webby Awards, Fipadoc, Golden Drum, and the European XR Awards, among others. Two of her VR franchises were awarded the first European Meta grant through Women in Immersive Technologies and the Immersive Creators Catalyst. She has also participated in prestigious residencies, including the Columbia University–backed Forward Slash Story.

As a director, Mischie has collaborated with Channel 4 UK on high-impact web documentaries and with Oscar-winning Legende Films. Her film Cumulonimbus was a Gopo Awards nominee and a finalist in the Coppola Shorts, selected by Gus Van Sant. Her portfolio spans cinematic VR (The Wetland), participatory poetry (Idonee), transmedia installations, and socially engaged web docs (Unsilenced Voices).

She is the co-founder and Head of Storyscapes, an NGO dedicated to expanded narrative formats, and a former collaborator with CINETic, a center at the intersection of neuroscience and audiovisual innovation. In Romania, she works as a transmedia futurist across creative and educational sectors and teaches digital storytelling, VR, and media arts at UNATC and UBB.

An active member of Women in Film and Television Los Angeles and the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Community, Mischie has spoken at global conferences including TEDxBoldandBrilliant and spearheaded educational initiatives like the Romanian VR Showcase in Cannes, CINE-RITM, and the National Screenwriting Alumni Pitch.

Her latest transmedia franchise, Government of Children, empowers youth to envision and design future societies through film, XR, and digital platforms. Guided by the belief that storytellers are “the architects of the future” (Buckminster Fuller), Mischie continues to redefine how narratives can shape collective imagination and cultural transformation.
