
Powell is an XR developer, 3D artist, writer/director and founder of TimeWave Studio, which focuses on creating formats with immersive technology. M. Curie, a virtual reality format exploring the life of Marie Curie, was a Finalist for Best Immersive Interactive VR at the Qld XR Festival ’23 and an Official Selection for FIVARS ’23. Upcoming VR formats in 2025 are The Atom Smashers and The Golden Toad. Powell participated in the Oculus Launchpad and Oculus Start programs.
TimeWave 2014-2017 conducted multiple seasons of XR Lab (formerly Virtual Reality Lab) and the VR Hackathon. XR Lab was hosted by the NYU Game Center and ITP/NYU and sponsored (at various times) by TIME Inc., Hearst Technologies and Samsung. Oculus contributed Rifts to the lab.
Powell was the Producing Artistic Director of TimeWave Festival (UK), an international theatre/tech festival gathering 75 artists and streaming in new work from London, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Madrid and Montreal. The festival was hosted by Innovation Warehouse, a leading British accelerator. Sponsors included: Walt Disney Imagineering, Hathersage Capital Management, Arts Council England, Telestream and Vidyo.
